Steve Wozniak event delights audiences, garners coverage in Star Tribune

Steve Wozniak chatting on stage with Phil AdamoThe Minneapolis Star Tribune recently published an article covering Steve Wozniak鈥檚 Scholarship Weekend presentation at Augsburg College. Wozniak, a聽co-founder of Apple, Inc., spoke about innovation, creativity, and education in an increasingly connected world.

“My whole life has been teaching myself things that were not learned in school,” he told a packed auditorium. “More important than learning, more important than knowledge, is motivation.”

Wozniak’s comments centered primarily聽on the early days of his career at Apple and the importance of continually revisiting challenging tasks.

According to the Star Tribune, “Looking back, Wozniak said part of his success came from simply forcing himself to put pencil to paper, over and over again.聽‘Creativity is a willingness to think very differently,’ he said. ‘Not knowing how to do something means sitting down to figure it out.'”

Spokesman-Recorder covers LeVar Burton’s presentation at
Scholarship Weekend

Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder - logoThe Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder recently published an article covering LeVar Burton’s Scholarship Weekend presentation. Burton, known for his roles in “Roots,” “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” and as the host of “Reading Rainbow,” spoke about the importance of literacy and called for education that incorporates reading and art into technical fields.

“Education is the key to freedom,” said Burton. “No one can oppress you and no one can impose their point of view on you. I believe that literacy is the birthright of every single one of us on this planet, no exceptions.”

The Spokesman-Recorder article also notes that Burton cited his mother Erma Jean Christen, a dedicated reader, and Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry as inspirations. Burton stressed the importance of diverse representation in media, saying that Star Trek’s inclusion of Lt. Uhura, one of the first prominent African-descended characters in television, helped him see himself as part of the future.

Star of Star Trek, Reading Rainbow and Roots explores innovation, creativity

(MINNEAPOLIS) — LeVar Burton 鈥� an educator, director, and actor best known for his roles in Reading Rainbow, Roots and Star Trek 鈥� will share with the public and the Augsburg community the importance of turning STEM into STE(A)M when he speaks at the College on February 13, 2016, as part of Scholarship Weekend.

Burton will talk about compelling reasons for integrating science, technology, engineering and math with the arts and design in his presentation 鈥淵ou can be anything: The importance of education, innovation, and creativity.鈥�

Every spring, Augsburg College welcomes the best and brightest prospective Auggies to participate in Scholarship Weekend. These students participate in a range of activities, connect with faculty and current students, compete for top scholarships, and hear from inspiring leaders. Levar Burton鈥檚 appearance follows on successful visits in previous years of his holiness the Dalai Lama and Bill Nye the 鈥淪cience Guy.鈥�

Auggies, public聽invited to presentation on聽education, innovation, and聽imagination

(MINNEAPOLIS) 鈥揂ctor, director, writer, producer and educator LeVar Burton, best known for his roles in Roots, Star Trek and Reading Rainbow, will share with the Augsburg community the importance of turning STEM into STE(A)M 鈥� integrating science, technology, engineering and math with the arts and design.

Burton will present on聽Feb. 13 for Scholarship Weekend,聽鈥淵ou Can be Anything: The Importance of Education, Innovation, and Imagination.鈥�

The Scholarship Weekend event is built upon the successful model used during 2015, in which Bill Nye 鈥淭he Science Guy鈥� spoke to a packed house of more than 2,000 prospective students, their families, members of the Augsburg community, and the public.

During the 2015 Scholarship Weekend, more than 175 students had the opportunity to be challenged by deep questions of planetary science, climate change, evolution, environmental awareness, and more.

Bill Nye presentation garners media attention

Bill Nye聽addressed聽1,800 people at Augsburg College on Valentine’s Day 2015 and shared his love for science.聽The sold-out event, titled “How Science Can Save the World,” was part of Augsburg’s annual Scholarship Weekend.

Scholarship Weekend happens every spring and gives prospective students the chance to meet with future classmates and professors, and to interview or audition for the President’s Scholarship and for Fine Arts Scholarships.

Nye, who will be on campus for the College鈥檚 Scholarship Weekend, will speak with academic depth and humor about planetary science, climate change, evolution, environmental awareness and more in his address 鈥淗ow Science Can Save the World.鈥�

Who

Bill Nye is a mechanical engineer who wants the world to know and appreciate the passion, beauty, and joy (the P, B & J) of science. Nye鈥檚 show, 鈥淏ill Nye The Science Guy,鈥� has garnered 18 Emmy awards. Nye won seven of those Emmy awards as host and head writer of the show. These days, Nye travels the globe exhorting audiences to change the world. He has a day job as the CEO of The Planetary Society, the world鈥檚 largest non-governmental space interest organization. Nye鈥檚 newest book, 鈥淯ndeniable: Evolution and the Science of Creation,鈥� was released in November.

Scholarship Weekend attracts top recruits

scholarshipMore than 200 potential new Augsburg students and their families will come to campus for Scholarship Weekend Feb. 22 and 23.

Approximately 100 students will compete for President’s Scholarship and 100 for Fine Arts Scholarships, with several students competing for both. Several students will do phone interviews for the President’s Scholarship while others will send in audition tapes/portfolios for the Fine Arts Scholarship.

“During the weekend, not only will students complete their audition, but they’ll also attend sessions with their parents designed introduce them to Augsburg, including study abroad options, research opportunities and more,” says Janet Bertok, Senior 绿茶直播 Counselor and Fine Arts Scholarship Coordinator.
