Advisory: LeVar Burton gives public address Feb. 13 at Augsburg

Star of Star Trek, Reading Rainbow and Roots explores innovation, creativity

(MINNEAPOLIS) — LeVar Burton 鈥� an educator, director, and actor best known for his roles in Reading Rainbow, Roots and Star Trek 鈥� will share with the public and the Augsburg community the importance of turning STEM into STE(A)M when he speaks at the College on February 13, 2016, as part of Scholarship Weekend.

Burton will talk about compelling reasons for integrating science, technology, engineering and math with the arts and design in his presentation 鈥淵ou can be anything: The importance of education, innovation, and creativity.鈥�

Every spring, Augsburg College welcomes the best and brightest prospective Auggies to participate in Scholarship Weekend. These students participate in a range of activities, connect with faculty and current students, compete for top scholarships, and hear from inspiring leaders. Levar Burton鈥檚 appearance follows on successful visits in previous years of his holiness the Dalai Lama and Bill Nye the 鈥淪cience Guy.鈥�

Bill Nye 鈥淭he Science Guy鈥� will share his love for science when he speaks February 14 at Augsburg College鈥檚 Scholarship Weekend in an address that is open to the general public. Nye, who will talk about 鈥淗ow Science Can Save the World,鈥� will speak with academic depth and humor about planetary science, climate change, evolution, environmental awareness, and more.

Tenzin Yeshi Paichang 鈥�16 plays unique role for Dalai Lama

Event 1: Nobel Peace Prize Forum Keynote Address

SATURDAY, MARCH 1听|听Security Check: 7:30 a.m., Program听9:40-10:20 A.M.听|听Minneapolis Convention Center

  • Description:听His Holiness the 14th听Dalai Lama will deliver the keynote speech at the 26th Nobel Peace Prize Forum at the Minneapolis Convention Center. His Holiness, the spiritual leader of Tibetans and Buddhists worldwide, will speak on topics of faith, peace, and human values. The speech will be delivered in English. The NPPF is housed and coordinated by Augsburg College.
  • Media Advisory:听Read and print the media advisory听here.
  • Media Credentialing:听Credentialing closed on Wednesday, February 19. Only members of the media who received notice of official credential approval will be permitted entrance.听A photo ID will be required to pick up credentials. Please also wear or bring the credentials issued by your employer.听Confirmations and additional information will be emailed to editors, reporters, and photographers who receive credentials.听If you do not receive a correspondence from Augsburg College by February 26 for this event, you were not approved for credentials. Credentials are not transferrable.
  • Parking:听Parking is on your own. No special accommodations were made at this venue.
  • Security:听All members of the media will be required to go through a security screening. All video cameras, still shot cameras, laptops, and any other recording devices or equipment will need to be placed in the media gallery for a security sweep. Media must be checked in and in the media gallery by the time of security checks. Late arrivals will not be permitted.

Event 2: Historic Tibetan New Year/Losar

SUNDAY, MARCH 2听|听Security Check: 6:30 a.m., Program:听9-11 A.M.听|听Augsburg College听

  • Description:听His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama will preside over the Tibetan New Year/Losar ceremony being held in Augsburg College’s Kennedy Center. It is the first time in the life of His Holiness, since exile, that he will observe Losar outside of India. The event is being held by the Tibetan American Foundation of Minnesota. The presentation will be in Tibetan. No translation services will be provided. Learn more about TAFM and the event听here.
