His Holiness, the spiritual leader of Tibetans and Buddhists worldwide, will speak on topics of faith, peace and human values.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At the heart of Augsburg&#8217;s mission are our commitments to educating informed global citizens and to embracing the links between faith and learning,&#8221; said Augsburg College President Paul Pribbenow. &#8220;The opportunity to host His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama at the Nobel Peace Prize Forum offers our students an inspiring example of someone who has lived out his faith to make peace and to make a difference.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>His Holiness was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 in honor of his opposition to the use of violence and advocacy of peaceful solutions founded upon tolerance and mutual respect. The strategies used by His Holiness, who at the time served as the religious and political leader of the Tibetan people, were undertaken to allow preservation of the historical and cultural heritage of his people. His constructive solutions extend beyond human rights advocacy to include global environmental problems.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The 2014 Nobel Peace Prize Forum takes place during two weekends, March 1 and March 7-9. Other Peace Prize winners who will speak include Leymah Gbowee and representatives of Doctors Without Borders. Speaker highlights include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>March 1 \u2013 Faith and Peace Day.<\/em><\/strong> Keynote speakers include His Holiness the 14<sup>th<\/sup> Dalai Lama and Sister Helen Prejean, a Roman Catholic nun most known for her work to abolish the death penalty and who was the inspiration for the film Dead Man Walking.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>March 7 \u2013 Law and Business Day.<\/em><\/strong> Ian Bremmer, founder and president of Eurasia Group, a global political risk research and consulting firm.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>March 8 \u2013 Science and Health Day.<\/em> <\/strong>Featured speakers include the <strong>Peace Prize-winning organization Doctors Without Borders<\/strong> and Dr. William Foege, an internationally known epidemiologist who worked in the successful campaign to eradicate smallpox during the 1970s.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>March 8 \u2013Featured Artist.<\/em><\/strong>Singer\/songwriter <strong>Mason Jennings<\/strong> will explore the intersections of peace and creative expression.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>March 9 \u2013 Global Day.<\/strong><\/em>Keynote speaker is <strong>Peace Prize Laureate Leymah Gbowee<\/strong>, the Liberian peace and women\u2019s rights activist who founded Liberian Mass Action for Peace to support women during times of war and who inspired the documentary Pray the Devil Back to Hell.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Tickets for all events are available online at <a href=\"http:\/\/peace.augsburg.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">peace.augsburg.edu<\/a>. Additional information will be made available via the NPPF website as additional speakers and organizations are confirmed.<\/p>\n<p>The NPPF is a premier international event designed to inspire peacemaking. Now in its 26<sup>th<\/sup> year, the Forum celebrates the work of Peace Prize Laureates and deeply explores questions of peace and conflict. This year\u2019s Forum addresses issues in law and business, health and science, and global issues. The program is housed and coordinated by Augsburg College in partnership with the University of Minnesota Humphrey School of Public Affairs and the School of Public Health, and the five Norwegian Lutheran colleges of Augsburg, Augustana College (Sioux Falls, SD), Concordia College (Moorhead), Luther College (Decorah, IA) and St. Olaf College (Northfield).
