We welcome your suggestions, questions and concerns about the\u00a0recycling program. <strong>For information and to request special pick-ups, please call Custodial\u00a0Services at x1640<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Where to recycle<\/h2>\n<p>Make recycling a part of your daily activities. With only a little planning, recycling is as\u00a0easy as not recycling.<\/p>\n<p>Single-stream recycling containers are located in all buildings on campus, including each dorm room, and outside. For example, you may have\u00a0large shipping cartons or wish to recycle boxes of old catalogs or brochures.<\/p>\n<h3>Batteries and Ink Jet Printer Cartridges<\/h3>\n<p>Although some places no longer consider alkaline batteries to be hazardous waste, Hennepin County and the City of Minneapolis are still recycling them to keep potentialy hazardous materials out of landfills, so Augsburg is following this higher standard. The following batteries can be recycled in the box on the Re-Use table in the lower level of Christensen Center:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Alkaline or pile alkaline<\/li>\n<li>Button batteries<\/li>\n<li>Carbon zinc (CZn)<\/li>\n<li>Lithium (Li)<\/li>\n<li>Lithium-ion (Li-ion)<\/li>\n<li>Mercuric oxide<\/li>\n<li>Nickel cadmium (Ni-Cd)<\/li>\n<li>Nickel metal hydride (NiMH)<\/li>\n<li>Nickel zinc (NiZn)<\/li>\n<li>Zinc air<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All types of ink jet printer cartridges are recyclable and can be remanufactured. They can be dropped off at places like Target or Best Buy.<\/p>\n<h3>Reusable Office Supplies<\/h3>\n<p>Drop off surplus\u00a0office supplies at the ReUse Table in lower level Christensen. Examples of reuse items\u00a0include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>file folders<\/li>\n<li>ring binders<\/li>\n<li>pens &amp; pencils<\/li>\n<li>index tabs<\/li>\n<li>scissors, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Feel free to take what you need. Given tight student or office budgets, this can save real\u00a0money!<\/p>\n<h2>MANAGING WASTE: the unseen recycling program<\/h2>\n<p>While we recycle those materials that you expect, we also recycle many things you may\u00a0not be aware of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Facilities Management recycles old appliances, carpeting, auto batteries and some\u00a0scrap metal.<\/li>\n<li>Yard waste (i.e., grass clippings, leaves, branches) is kept in a separate dumpster for\u00a0composting.<\/li>\n<li>We have had tremendous success in recycling Augsburg\u2019s cast-off furniture. Schools,\u00a0shelters, and other charitable organizations have benefited from these reusable items.<\/li>\n<li>IT recycles its old computers through a service that extracts the metals, after salvaging\u00a0parts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition, certain items must be kept out of the usual waste stream and disposed of in\u00a0ways that are environmentally responsible. This usually involves using specially\u00a0licensed contractors:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Burned out fluorescent light bulbs are taken to a special disposal site that extracts the\u00a0mercury; hazardous waste that otherwise would end up in landfills and possibly in\u00a0ground water. In the past those same fluorescent lights used ballasts containing PCBs.\u00a0Such ballasts are also kept out of the waste stream and processed to render them less\u00a0harmful to the environment.<\/li>\n<li>Disposal of hazardous chemicals, bio-hazardous waste, and lab sharps (syringes,\u00a0glass slides, etc.).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Even though the task of managing waste is complex, there are definite benefits to the\u00a0environment and to the Augsburg community.<\/p>\n<h2>\u00a0WASTE PREVENTION: REDUCE, REUSE<\/h2>\n<p>The essential point of waste prevention is to reduce the amount of waste we generate in\u00a0the first place. Waste prevention conserves natural resources, raw materials, and land\u00a0otherwise needed for landfills. Waste prevention is also its own direct economic reward.<\/p>\n<h2>WASTE PREVENTION TIPS<\/h2>\n<p>Here are just a few of the simple things you can do to help. Please send us your tips so\u00a0that we can pass them along to others.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Make two-sided copies. This saves money as well as paper.<\/li>\n<li>Reuse the blank side of office paper for jotting notes.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid printing on dark or brightly colored papers.<\/li>\n<li>Reuse envelopes for sending on-campus mail or use multiple-name routing envelopes.<\/li>\n<li>Use your own ceramic coffee cup instead of Styrofoam.<\/li>\n<li>Share newspaper and magazine subscriptions with friends and colleagues.<\/li>\n<li>Send correspondence through e-mail: avoid &#8220;snail-mail&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>Purchase quality goods; they will last longer and be more economical in the long run.<\/li>\n<li>Offer to give away what you no longer need; one person&#8217;s trash may be another&#8217;s\u00a0treasure.<\/li>\n<li>Close the recycling loop by purchasing products made from recycled materials.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As members of the Augsburg community we are expected to demonstrate good\u00a0stewardship in managing the resources in our care.
